Engineering solution to fix slipping devices in two Burgersfort (Limpopo South Africa) furnaces.
Afrinov (Pty) Ltd was approached by a client, whose slipping device was failing in that several segment unclamping pull rods were failing on the weld where the rod is joined to contact shoe back plate. The project was challenging in that it had to be completed within 30 days from the start of the furnace shutdown – which “looked impossible until it was done”. The scope included the Proposal, Designing and Implementation of a new solution, Decommissioning the old slipping device, Manufacturing of new components, Refurbishment of old components, Installation and Commissioning of Slipping Devices for two Furnaces for a client in Burgersfort, Limpopo Province. Afrinov was up to the task, manufacturing and delivering the six slipping devices in 21 days, and completing the installation in less than a week, a period which according to the client was, “miraculous”.
Decommissioning, refurbishing, and installing slipping devices for two furnaces in Mooinooi, Northwest Province.
Afrinov (Pty) Ltd was approached by a client, whose slipping device was failing in that it was buckling the electrode casing and the contact shoes lining was finished. The project required abrupt decommissioning of the slipping devices in the two furnaces, the manufacturing of new clamping shoes and other components, refurbishment of some of the existing components, the assembly and testing of the newly manufactured equipment, installation and commissioning. Afrinov made the completion of the project earlier than the client’s requirements in the following way:
- Completed Decommissioning of the slipping devices in 3 days
- Completed the manufacturing process and assembly in less than a week from decommissioning.
- Completed the installation and commissioning in less than a week from delivery of material to site.
Manufacturing of the Autoclave Discharge Tank (South Africa)
Afrinov received an order for the manufacturing of the tank for a mine in Northam, Limpopo Province, South Africa. This project involved on-site measurement of the tank and its structures, redesign, creation of new drawings, which were then used for the manufacturing of the tank. The boosted over 7 tons worth of stainless steel and required an abnormal truck to be delivered to site due to its dimensions. Afrinov completed this project over a month earlier than the client’s requirements, meeting all the technical and quality specifications. Satisfied with our workmanship, the client further extended a purchase order for the installation of the tank on site.
Fabrication of furnace water cooled off gas cones for two furnaces.
The challenge with the fabrication of water-cooled ducts and cones rests in the ability to manufacture the equipment on time, without compromising the quality. This is because these cones/ducts are located on the furnace roof and are cooled with water, which if it leaks into the furnace can cause explosions. Being entrusted with a project of this magnitude, with such a high standard or quality and safety measures was a great vote of confidence from our client. The team was able to manufacture the cones earlier than the client’s requirements and they passed the quality test, both in the testing facility through pressure testing and on site following a successful installation.
Decommissioning and replacement of furnace feed bins.
Afrinov received an exciting challenge when given a site project to decommission furnace feed bins and install the replacement bins.
The project was labour intensive and critical in nature as the feed bins were in the critical path of the furnace shut down and the team had a maximum of eight days to do both the decommissioning of old and installation of the new bins. It was a mammoth task, in a challenging brown field environment, making it difficult to navigate the site during decommissioning and installation. Our capable site team of rigger, fitters, welders, boiler makers and general assistants, let by their supervisors, site manager, went on a double shift mission to avert the mission impossible nature of the project. This effort was not without reward as the team completed the project earlier than anticipated, giving the client an opportunity to restart the furnace a day earlier than the scheduled date.
